updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - Kiva - 02-14-2007 Ok, i hate windows. However, I have to set it up on the machine I'm sending to Kabul... I installed XP into Parallels. Ran fine. I did the windows update once and it rebooted fine. I ran the updater again and got some more updates to do...now, when i hit restart, it's stuck on 'Windows is starting up".....it's been sitting there for 15min. Ugh... What do I do...delete the virtual machine and start over again? What a joke.. kiva Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - ztirffritz - 02-15-2007 Doesn't Parallels allow you to take a snapshot of the machine? Before installing anything, or applying updates I always take a snapshot of the machine in VMWare. Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - MacManMaz - 02-15-2007 It may not have to do with parallels. When I updated XP from my bootcamp partition, I had hangs and stops. I just re-booted and the installer seemed to work the second time around. If you are installing XP without SP2, then it will take considerably more time and re-starts to get updated. The first step should be to let windows update install the newest version of windows update. (fun isn't it) Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - MacManMaz - 02-15-2007 A common problem is when windows recognizes hardware that is plugged in during an update and tries to update drivers or install it. Try unplugging any non-essential peripherals when doing the windows update. Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - Monster - 02-15-2007 The Wonderful World of Windows NOT! Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - lafinfil - 02-15-2007 Really no offense here Kiva because I know your heart is in the right place but I really don't think you really did your friend any favors talking them into a mac to run windows programs unless they are a bit of a tech geek on some level and especially if you are not willing to be their tech support. Parallels is hardly plug and play and this is likely going to be an ongoing problem for this person who will be sitting out in the middle of nowhere without tech support. If they are going to switch to the mac get them to make the break from windows and be done with it. IIRC the only windows program they needed was MS Publisher - or is there something else that was not available on the mac side ? Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - Kiva - 02-16-2007 lafinfil.... we broke it down and all she wants to use is Publisher and she says she uses it 2x/year. I think she'll end up liking Pages instead. Also, she is a bit of a geek and her co-director is a mac-head. I'm setting it all up first as it's very hard to send things to Kabul and it is much easier if I do it all here before sending. Things have a way of disappearing in customs.. The problem with the XP install was fixed easily. Turns out I was using a previously-registered copy...got a new one and all is fine. thanks for the feedback.. my prediction is that she maybe boots into windoze once or twice... kiva Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - lafinfil - 02-16-2007 That's good to hear - I have a sister that just won't give up MS Punisher either : -) I have set up the Parallels a couple times and it is a bit a work Hope it works out for her Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - Kiva - 02-16-2007 thanks...me as well. Thanks for the honest thoughts. I'm glad she has a mac-head friend in Kabul that can help her. Do you find that Boot Camp is less troublesome? Should I install both? kiva Re: updating XP in Parallels breaks XP? - lafinfil - 02-16-2007 I never did bootcamp - just helped my bro in law set up Parallels on a 20" imac As far as one or both - that would be a new question for the experts here : -) |
