MacBook Pro won't boot - DewGuy - 10-01-2023
I've got an 13.3" early-2011 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.13.6 (High Sierra) and yesterday it started booting very, very slowly and doesn't complete booting. It seems to be getting stuck after the progress bar completely fills in.
I've tried resetting the SMC and the NVRAM multiple times to no avail. I've booted into Recovery mode and Disk Utility says the hard drive is OK. I attempted to reinstall the OS from Recovery mode and it says it's unable to contact the server. I've tried booting into Safe mode but, apparently that's not possible with an encrypted hard drive (File Vault).
Any other ideas?

15” model? Any chance you’re hitting the gpu hardware failure issue?

Nope, it's the 13.3" model.

Apple no longer supports High Sierra or 2011 mbps, so I assume you won't be able to download it via recovery mode.
If you have a bootable external hard drive, try that and see if it boots.
It seems very likely that the 12yo hard drive is about to die for good.

The Disk Utility often misses SMART errors until there's near-complete data loss.
You need a bootable external drive or a second Mac to test for this... And if you don't have a bootable external drive, you'll need a second Mac to create one.
So, do you have a second Mac?
