Any recommendations for a USB Switch (KM and Mouse) between 2 computers - gadje - 10-05-2023

I don't plan to attach USB drives, and I can switch video input from the monitor. I think a KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) would be more expensive.

I have this in my shopping cart... pull the trigger or buy something else?

This would be less expensive

if both are on the LAN, connect and share screen will get you there.
I do this with an '18 mini and a MP3,1 and one monitor with a DVI and a DP input. Mine are on a 5 port unmanaged switch like this.

True, but I never heard of that brand and the reviews seem almost too good...

I think I'll try VNC for a while and see how it goes

I'm not sure if they found their way to Harbourmaster years ago, of they're in our storage unit, but I had/may have a couple of manual/twisty knobbed USB switch boxes and KVM's, and/or an Iogear 2 or 4 port full size USB KVM, and one their mini USB KVM's, and they do mean mini (obviously the VGA wouldn't be used).....

Anything I find can be yours for shipping, but your Ugreen is only $22 at Wally's, so that's the way I'd go....

Edit: I'm in the throws of trying to get an ancient white plastic MacBook to screen share to a *much* newer M1 iMac without luck so far, hence the shared interest in other solutions.

It may not make any difference, but using Screen Sharing means no audio from the 'other computer' is heard on the dom computer.

I use it for moving files from my MBA to my mini (2012), and because they're both in different rooms.

If your computers are next to each other or you can easily see/switch your monitor between them (dual input monitor) and you do this a lot, then Screen Sharing may not be the way to go.

That $36 box will be a lot more efficient and fluid than Screen Share.

true, no audio. It is possible using the LAN and AULabs or AVB with some later Macs. But the MP3,1 doesn't support AVB.
Only Tbolt Macs.
Which is why I need to get a toslink to connect the MP3,1 to my Apollo I/O.

I have a 2-port IOgear HDMI KVM connecting two Minis to a monitor and keyboard. It works well but costs about $100.
