cut in 4 pieces, throw in different trash bags, not one will ever try to put them together.

or throw them in the trash can in different days/weeks

Bought this almost two years ago. Still going strong and happy with my Amazon purchase.

Kap,

Look at this thread.

The models that are in the links are out of your price range but I considered them for good reason. End result, I purchased another Fellowes 79CI. Works great. The secondary power button issue is still a concern but I'll be good as long as I get years out of the purchase. I did that with the first one I owned and other 79ci models I have in service elsewhere are still going strong. Same goes for the 99ci I have at my office.

Be less concerned about whether a shredder is micro-cut, cross-cut, confetti-cut, etc. The security level is what matters, regardless of cut. Some guides to security levels:

Any shredder I purchase must have a security level of at least a P-4 model or higher. The 79ci and the 99ci are both P-4 models.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
Had an Aurora. Lasted almost 4 years. Croaked last month. Cause of death--major paper jam. Had a Fellowes years ago. Lasted 10 year. Cause of death -- engine burnt out. Considering another Fellowes.

Kap,

What was the shredding capacity of these? One of the common causes of burnout is a combination using it for too long of a duration causing it to overheat. Usually not an issue if it happens once or twice but can definitely cause motor burnout if it happens too many times.

Another issue is buying a shredder that isn't capable enough for your shredding jobs. It can contribute to burnout if it causes too many jams and overheating. It's one of the reasons I spend the bucks for a heavier-duty model instead of personal or lower end models.

Don't forgot to oil the blades, too. It reduces jams by making it easier for the blades to cut paper and push the bits into the bucket and increases the overall longevity.
