Update to weird iPhone notification post below... - PeterB - 12-17-2023 OP here: https://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,2893108 ... someone I text with, tells me that my iMessages are now showing up under my iCloud email address, rather than my phone number. I did not make any changes that I'm aware of, on my end -- either to cause the notification I originally posted about, or to change Messages behavior. Any idea what's going on here? Also, I'd turned on all the security features available to me in iOS16, according to an article which -- sure enough -- I now cannot find. So the iCloud stuff under Settings is greyed out. Edit: and right as I'm typing this, I just got a dialog box pop up: "Do you want to add _____ to iMessage and FaceTime? This number was associated with the AppleID ______", where the first blank is my phone number and the second is my AppleID email address. I've gone ahead and clicked "yes" to the dialog box. Clearly, something wonky is going on...? Re: Update to weird iPhone notification post below... - gadje - 12-17-2023 there is a setting to start new message from ... and there you can choose phone number or Apple ID Re: Update to weird iPhone notification post below... - PeterB - 12-17-2023 gadje wrote: Except that I was replying to a previous text from the same person, so I didn't choose to use my Apple ID. I wonder if Apple is monkeying around with security settings or something? Re: Update to weird iPhone notification post below... - PeterB - 12-18-2023 OK, so I think I figured it out: Somehow, in the Messages settings, it was set to allow me to send/receive from both my phone number and either my iCloud account email or email address. How this got set this way is beyond me, since I definitely didn't change it in the settings. I'm still thinking Apple must have changed something, which would explain both why I got the notification about a new device using my iCloud account, and this change to the settings. |
