Help me help a switcher! Printer problems - davec - 02-19-2007

A minister friend of mine recently purchased an iMac (2ghz-Core2Duo). He is running Mac OS 10.4.8. He had no problems setting up his new Mac except for the printer. The printer he is using at the church is a Konica/Minolta laser copier/printer (office type-model 7222- 7235...I've got the manual in my hands). He attempted to set it up using the Print Set-up Utility as an IP printer. He entered the IP address and selected "Generic Postscript Printer" driver. When attempting to print he gets a "Printer is busy" message in the Print Utility box. I am a novice when it comes to networking and would appreciate any helpful suggestions. Thanks! Dave

May require Apple Talk... Network preferences...

I don't think that the generic postscript printer driver is going to work for him. He needs to locate a PPD file or an installer for that printer. If he set it up via TCP/IP appletalk is not neccessary. Regardless of how he connects to it, he has to have a PPD.

swampy- thanks. I did check network preferences and AppleTalk is active for his iMac. I just entered the web utility for the printer/copier (using the IP address and Safari). It has TCP/IP enabled but AppleTalk is disabled. Does the printer need to have AppleTalk enabled to work, but shouldn't it be able to work as an IP (TCP/IP) printer? They have several other (Windows) computers using the Konica/Minolta...I don't want to mess their printing up). Is there another printer driver I should select other than "generic"? Thanks for the help! I'm really stumped here (and I've always preached about how easy Macs were to set up). Thanks! Dave

C-ris, thanks. A PPD file or installer? Would I find that at a Minolta/Konica web site? Consider me in elementary school when it comes to networks and IP printers. Thanks! Dave

Using the web access to the copier printer the model number is 7228. I did go the the Konica/Minolta web site and entered the model number. I found a printer driver. I'll download and see if that is the answer...Thanks for the help! Dave

Re: Help me help a switcher! Printer problems - davec - 02-19-2007

I downloaded the driver, but when I double click to open the .sit file The Mac Printer Setup Utility opens- not the driver. Odd! Don't I need Stuffit Expander to open this file? I did search his hard drive and did not find expander. I'm guess it is something I need to download? Thanks! Dave

Still problems! I downloaded stuffit expander and successfully expanded and installed the printer software (including PPD files). I went back to Printer Setup Utility and then selected the Konica Minolta printer (IP-424 PS) from the list and "Applied Changes". When I print I still get the "printer busy -will try again in 10 seconds". What am I doing wrong or missing? Thanks, Dave

Re: Help me help a switcher! Printer problems - davec - 02-19-2007

Problems, but progress. I started from the beginning and "added" the Konica/Minolta as a new printer in the Print Setup Utility, entered the IP address and used the Konica/Minolta printer model. Now the printer does respond to the iMac (no printer "busy"!). Unfortunately it prints out 1 page with the following: %!SP-Adobe-3.0 (next line) %RBINumCopies: 1 (next line) %%Pages: (atend) %APL_DSC_ENCODING: UTF8 (next line) %%Title: (Mic. It follows that page with several blank pages (until I press the quit key)

I feel like I am close to the solution, but something is still wrong. What would be my next step? Thanks in advance for the help! Dave

Dang! Still the same problem! One page with the few lines of text (noted in the post above) and pages of blank paper until I click "quit" on the copier/printer.

Shoot! I'm out of ideas. Any helpful suggestions would really be appreciated! I will continue to monitor this thread! Dave
