Where do y’all stand on TikTok? - pdq - 03-13-2024
I’ve never used it (I’m too old + out of the loop) and maybe I don’t know enough about it, but it seems silly to me.
They’re mining our data? Amazon and Google aren’t?
Well, those two aren’t owned by the dreaded CCP. (Well, neither is TikTok). The Singaporean CEO claims all US data is stored in the US, on US-owned servers, overseen by American companies. And whoever owns it, they’re gonna know our personal preferences… in dance videos, “challenges”, and “influencers”?
Don’t really have a dog in this fight - mildly amused that it has scrambled the usual lockstep affiliations.

It's incredibly addictive with simple injections of enjoyment.

I have no meaningful opinion of the current bill.
But I've been against TikTok from the beginning. I've worked in China. I've dealt with their internet 'surveillance' tied to WeChat and their Firewall.
I've literally never visited their platform. If you do, you should assume ALL of your data - even some you do not realize - WILL be in China. Period.
Whether that data is being used for any purposes - who knows. But I see no reason to give them any.
Similarly, I've never been on Instagram. I have a facebook account for work, but I've been able to let it be de-activated. I do not need my data in the hands of King Z.
The most recent impact where hundreds of teenagers were weaponized to fight the bill in Congress just proves that TikTok cannot be trusted.
As I said, I am not informed on the specifics of the bill. But I am in favor of a law that will pass SCOTUS scrutiny that ends the massive data dump to China and ends the control of the algorithm by a foreign government.
I say this even without 'proof' that they are doing anything 'bad'. It's just not worth the risk.
