Pilot introduces self as pilot at hearing, lawmaker asks her about life as a stewardess - Lemon Drop - 03-16-2024

Gentlemen, please.

Good thing he didn't meet a male flight attendant.

"Ah, to be a woman in a male-dominated industry! During a hearing regarding amendments to Minnesota’s safe and sick time law, first officer Laura Haynor introduced herself as a pilot for Delta. In his immediate response, state senator Gene Dornink asked her about her typical week as a stewardess. Whoops!"

She should have asked him about his typical week as a misinogyst.

Funny. I saw the headline, but didn’t read the story - I assumed it was because of the term “stewardess”, which my wife tells me is being phased out (or has been phased out) in favor of Flight Attendant.

Didn’t realize the “stewardess” in question was a pilot. Oopsies.

Reminds me of the old riddle about the father and son in a car accident - the father is killed and the son is rushed to the hospital, where the surgeon says “I can’t operate on him - he is my son”. How, oh how could this be?

At least he didn't say Sky Bus Waitress.

I'm curious about the reason for this gaffe.

Is he a misogynist?

Was he deliberately trying to impugn her dignity?

Was he just not paying attention?

None of his listed bona fides preclude him from treating her with the courtesy and respect she deserves.

And I don't think I've seen the term 'stewardess' used a half-dozen times in a decade or few.

None of this is a defense for his, at best, oversight, but I'm wondering how he managed this.

Diminished mental acuity/capacity?

So, sure. It’s probably still a little surprising to run into a female pilot. It’s also generally a pretty smart idea to listen to women when they introduce themselves.

I can cut the guy a little slack for not knowing what a 'first officer' is when someone is wearing wings, but seriously, I think the not paying attention to an introduction is a problem.

At least it doesn't appear he was doing a P45* insulting dismissal like calling Cook 'Tim Apple'.

He did apologize to her and said he wasn't listening carefully. When someone says "stewardess," I get the impression they don't fly much because that has been out for decades.

I remember taking a flight with my Dad, circa 1988, and the pilot was a woman. He got in his seat and said "that pilot is a girl!" And seemed genuinely nervous for our safety.
