looking for cheap, creative solution for car kickpanel protection - wurm - 03-20-2024

I'm getting less limber as I get older. As a result, I've developed a bad habit of kicking open the driver's side door when exiting my vehicle. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing actual damage (yet), but it makes for a scuffed up, nasty looking door kickpanel. If I remember, I'll try to take a picture tomorrow so you can see what I mean. I thought such a thing would be simple to find, but the ones I am finding are ridiculously expensive because they're often made to custom fit a particular vehicle.

So I'm interested in some cheap, creative ideas to accomplish what I want. Yes, I know the best answer is not to kick open the door. Meanwhile, is there some flexible, yet sturdy-ish hunk of plastic/vinyl/rubber that I could somehow non-destructively fasten to the bottom part of the door panel where my shoe invariably hits? Hell, I may just buy a cheap car floor mat and cut it to size and velcro it on there.

Thanks.

You could just wrap it with clear vinyl of some nature to protect it. Would need to trim to fit, but should work ok.

Saran Wrap.

Whatever material you choose to for the scuff panel, it might be nice to find it in black so it hides scuff marks better.

Whatever you use, it should be completely removable, leaving no trace. Otherwise, what's the point?

Match the color and texture of the door-panel with sticky-back 3m vinyl film.

It sticks well when there's enough surface area, peels off easily for replacement if it gets too scuffed.

Available in myriad colors and patterns.

I used to pick up strips and rolls of the stuff from local sign shops for my old art projects. (A roll is overkill for this.) Walk into a sign shop and ask about it.

Whatever you use, make sure it actually withstands the abrading received when pushing the door open with your foot.

Me, I'd work on limbering up and muscle tone so I could open the door properly.

I know you acknowledged 'don't kick the door', but you should work at avoiding doing that.

Lots of good ideas here, thanks.

That seems like a good option, though I can't think of any sign shops around here. Maybe Amazon has it. BTW, here's a pic of what I'm talking about.

I guess Amazon does have it (or something like it. https://www.amazon.com/Matte-Black-Vinyl-Air-Release-Trucks/dp/B0CM6Y85F2/ref=sr_1_15?crid=3FPNQAZX6SF0A&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.4sRkW-IHkulB8ymRvGA1FbTUchgAC_hIK_0W2fOc5j-0xjAph-I2krquN56LTrmPNj2FrziHI6qM7n7U6rPpuQvtQIavCQazXapZp3pIdBGJbwDr_OQBGWCbVpisme_zGWDtpmLzrFh_ZHQK0Qy5AC8wdDntQ-6Lrv_-aKg0fmsY3Y9iSKPy0YlUfoUEWStQvMsr7cWsAPV146mBkCXu6i2YKM0esN8sqKu4UZtU2YBE1BMutGKJPZVU-hFGmi5DmSovTKtRvqD8MuNKrCGikDi_ogJOu287NQY-vULa5pQ.-DgWc19bs1L5VrzByMfDPD9AUoXj9Ysy-5bQCg5uRs0&dib_tag=se&keywords=textured%2B3m%2Bvinyl%2Bfilm&qid=1710938862&sprefix=textured%2B3m%2Bvinyl%2Bfilm%2Caps%2C78&sr=8-15&th=1

That kydex idea looks interesting, too.

Thanks!
