New Jersey is moving to Philadelphia tomorrow, watch live - Ombligo - 03-20-2024

The WW2 battleship USS New Jersey is being moved down the Delaware River tomorrow (4/21) with a planned start around 11am. The ship is to be drydocked for hull repairs, the first time in 32 years.

[EDIT: Move time is set for 12:10 to coincide with high tide]

It will be floated from its moaring in Camden to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, a distance of about 5 miles.

You can watch the move at NBC10.com

The USS Texas was moved last year for similar drydock work and just refloated earlier this month as work continues before it is moved to a new home in Galveston.

Battleship Nj Youtube has been covering the dry dock planning/move for months. They will start giving dry dock tours in a few weeks, if you want a closeup view. It will be in dry dock just two months.

The Battleship Texas is a much older ship by decades. It was in bad shape.

”In World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, and the Persian Gulf, the New Jersey earned a total of 19 Battle and Campaign stars, making her the most decorated battleship in American history, the most of any surviving U.S. Navy ship, and the second-most decorated ship in American history.”

Rumor has it that the NJ is longer than the others in her class. Story is that the workers cut each plate just a tad longer than spec. Also made her slower. She was as Bull Halsey’s flag ship for a while.

Yes, about 7 inches longer.

I toured the Battleship Missouri docked at Pearl Harbor in February - the sister ship of the New Jersey and Iowa. Very impressive - they had a Mac lab and a PC lab on the ship.

Many TV stations have at least an hour streaming on YouTube. There were some good speeches at the ceremony at the dock, including the governor. The ship is on it’s way to Paulsboro,Nj where it will be ‘balanced’ for a week before moving into dry dock.

4:35 drone view of the USS NJ traveling under the bridge Link

Not much space between the top of the ship and the bridge. They had to remove the top of the tower to clear the bridge.
