Is Edison rolling over in his grave? - samintx - 02-26-2007

I use "green" lite bulbs here and there but they are costly....are we going to have to start paying out the wazzoo for lightbulbs and 1st class postage (41 cents proposed)

and the post office is proposing a safe guard stamp...buy it now and it is good even if rates go up.

You need to shop around better, I buy 8-Packs of CFL bulbs at Costco, and they average about $1.00-$1.50 per bulb. They pay for themselves in electricity savings, and also last a very long time.

I use CFLs in about 90% of my bulbs and am happy with the electric savings, but I still prefer incandescent lighting.

We built our house 11 years ago and put in energy saving bulbs in almost all areas. I cannot think of even one bulb that has had to be changed yet. However I have had to change the few ordinary bulbs a few times. They've paid for themselves many times for my own economics and have used just a fraction of the energy as well. All bought from IKEA so were the cheapest going as well.

Depending where you live, those might be subsidized.

With the local utility subsidizing CFL bulbs at the retail level in Northern California, I have gotten 4-packs of 60 Watt equivalent bulbs for $1 (25ยข each) on closeout. With Wal-Mart trying to improve their corporate image by doing things like pushing CFL bulbs, they will become ubiquitous right about the time LED bulbs that are 2 or 2.5 times as efficient start flooding the market.

I use quite a few and the technology has vastly improved over the ones available earlier
but I think they need to put a "core charge" on them and make retailer take them back when they burn out
in order to keep them out of the landfills (mercury and all)

The only CF bulbs that've gone out in my house in over a year is a round type that goes in over the bathroom sink. It may have been a bad batch (3 pack) because all has been well since 3 were replaced.

The ones I have even though the wattage equivalent is the same are just not as bright.
