I'm giving up. - wurm - 11-01-2024 I'm not giving up hope. But I've giving up worrying about it. I've cast my vote. At this point I can't do anything about the outcome, or even how long it takes to reach an outcome. All I can accomplish by getting stressed out about it is to get more stressed out. I'm too damned old to fight (effectively) in a civil war. I'm trying to prepare myself for three possible outcomes. 1. A landslide victory for Harris/Walz (which very likely will be contested) 2. A close victory for Harris/Walz (which most assuredly will be contested) 3. Any kind of victory for the turd (which should but probably won't be contested) By January 6, 2025 I'll either be a happy camper or start looking for places to ride out my remaining years. Re: I'm giving up. - gabester - 11-01-2024 But... you can still do something about the outcome, wurm. I'm not saying you need to worry about it because you need to handle how you address the upcoming days of chaos in your own way. But you could still: (1) Reach out to anyone you know in swing states, and encourage them one last time, to vote. And preferably, to vote for sanity and continuity, not utter chaos that could lead to so much loss and destruction. (I mean, really, no vaccines, no independent Federal Reserve, plans to deliberately disrupt the economy as some "temporary pain" is necessary to reduce the US debt? and such utter lack. of. professionalism. Especially when it comes to communications. (2) Actually help get out the vote on Tuesday. Help people get to the polls to cast their vote, even if you're in a "safe" state where your vote doesn't really matter because of the (slavery protecting idiocy of) the Electoral College. (3) Continue to participate and protest and protect our democracy after the election regardless of the outcome and the court decisions. I'm not saying this specifically to target you for action, but so that we all remember there's (always) more to do. To paraphrase Jefferson, we keep this thing called Democracy in our nation by constantly putting in effort and improving and shaping it. OK, now I'm going to go cast my ballot; and I intend to do at least 2 of the 3 things above afterwards, or I may forever regret it pending the final outcome. They say that Uruguay is nice, btw, but I don't know that you'll be able to ride out a second term and the ensuing disasters anywhere in the world. Re: I'm giving up. - Blankity Blank - 11-01-2024 I'm prepared for either outcome too. The MOST important thing is, this is still a race. Vote. Encourage others to vote. Help this close to you to vote, if they need it. Vote. Vote. Vote. If Harris was going to win by a KO, there would be more signs of it. There's no lying about it, Trump is still going strong, very strong. All these YouTube videos breathlessly gabbling about Trump looking ridiculous and spouting gibberish [I'm looking at you David Pakman] totally miss the point and really only serve as donuts at the rally if the blue faithful. This buffoonish character is his big gun for cementing and growing his base. It's mother's milk to them, swaddling them in their retrograde beliefs. But, no, he hasn't got it wrapped up either. It's to his advantage that it's the swing states still in play. From what I've heard, when hanging in a close balance, those states tend to go conservative. But the flip side to the game Trump is playing is that, well, he's hideous. Offensive to anyone of substantive common sense and humanity. He's done and said horrendous things. His actions have caused and continue to cause misery and death. And outside the MAGA/Q bubble there is great anger and determination and fear of what he promises to bring if he gets a second bite at the apple. The groundswell that is so often missed by pollsters could very well be what buries him. Re: I'm giving up. - Ted King - 11-01-2024 I can't help it, I keep wanting more fixes of hopium. Re: I'm giving up. - $tevie - 11-01-2024 I am beginning to feel pretty good about this election. I do truly believe that the GOP has contaminated polls with fakery and that they are not accurate. Young people do not answer their phones, and as first time voters are unlikely to be polled anyhow. TikTok has found the "grab'em by the pussy" video and it is being wildly shared by people who were kids when it happened and don't remember it and find it gross. And don't forget Puerto Rican people living here. I think Trump has done nothing but shoot himself in the foot every day for at least a week now. I think anyone who is not a MAGAt is just plain tired of him. He's exhausting. And wants to shoot Liz Cheney. It's too much for anyone but the insane to want to deal with. It might have been statistical noise but it sure felt like he was gaining strength. Maybe because that gambit worked so well, he thought he should hit that button even more often and a lot harder. Turns out that those grossly provocative actions of going deep into misogyny seems to have caused a strong reaction of anti-misogyny. I, too, get the feeling that the momentum has shifted back to Harris. If so, there are probably a lot more reasons - like Puerto Rico - than only the misogyny thing, but I think it is a very significant part. It's looking to me more and more like women are going to save us a second time. I know if I fly with this feeling, I'm going to crash hard if Trump wins. But here's the thing - if Trump wins I know I'm going to feel so bad that I don't think I'd feel worse because I was high on hopium before the election. Re: I'm giving up. - wurm - 11-01-2024 Thanks for the comments, all. Everything you say, $tevie, makes sense. But common sense is one of the things that seems to have left the country (if not the planet). I do live in a state that for as long as I can remember didn't matter as far as elections go; at least Presidential elections. Which only adds to the frustration. Every vote in every state should matter. And I don't have friends or even know anyone in swing states. I do feel I may have some impact by having voted all the way down the D line in every race on the ballot. Maybe at least that will make a difference. You know me, GA seems to be the biggest swinger in the south. Lol If I NEVER see or hear another political ad, it will be too soon. Re: I'm giving up. - wurm - 11-02-2024 And I'm pleased to know you both. And any others here in swing states (or not). It's a comforting place to be. ![]() |
