Monkeys will never type Shakespeare, BUT... - davester - 11-01-2024

The "infinite monkey theorem" has been debunked. The theory that a monkey typing randomly on a keyboard would eventually type out the works of Shakespeare has been proven to take longer than the heat death of the universe (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c748kmvwyv9o).

BUT...a monkey typing randomly can reliably turn out a Donald Trump word salad speech about once a week.

That is all!

I never believed that anyway.
However, I would take the monkey over the orange jackass any day of the week

The way I originally heard it was…

With an infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of typewriters, one of them will type the works of Shakespeare.

Not the same calculation, and a cursory web search would indicate that at least some others have heard it as well.

Old, but not a “joke” per se…

“One of the earliest instances of the use of the "monkey metaphor" is that of French mathematician Émile Borel in 1913, but the first instance may have been even earlier…
