Follow up to "Ownership of an external boot drive, part 2" - good news! - flareslow - 04-18-2025

I had been unsuccessful in creating an external boot TB4 ssd for my M1 MBP. None of the procedures from Apple would work with Sequoia 15.4. Diana had been having a similar problem as discussed in this topic:

Ownership of an external boot drive, part 2

This week Apple released version 15.4.1 and I updated my MBP and also downloaded the installer. I erased the ssd and ran the installer, and to my amazement it worked. I then used Migration Assistant to move my stuff over from the MBP to the ssd and I now sit typing this with the machine booted from the ssd.

I take back all the bad things I said about Apple.

Diana, I hope this helps you.

The previous worked for a short time, and then quit, telling me that the OS needed to be reinstalled. I was beginning to think it was hardware, either the Studio or the external. I’m glad it works for you; post back if you have issues.

As it’s nearly 9pm local time I will try this tomorrow. It’s been a long day and I’m just now getting home. I’ll post my results.

Apple makes this entirely too damn hard.

My music collection all by itself (predates iTunes, and you can get off my lawn anytime) is larger than the 1TB SSD in my M2 Pro Mini--and the Music app still forgets where it is after any reboot. That doesn't even bring up how asinine it is that you can't easily set up mobile device backups on an external drive.

Tim, next Auburn game you're at, we are gonna have words...

An update:

First, I updated the internal on the Studio. I then downloaded the .1 update (full installer) and instead of saving it, I told it to install on the external drive. Everything went smoothly, with no ownership questions. Smooth as buttah. It booted from the external drive without prompting and I’ve let it go to sleep for a time or two with no problems. I will need to update some software on it tomorrow, but so far it seems good.

On the agenda tomorrow is booting to the internal drive and then back to the external to see if it causes any problems. I’m not anticipating any but one never knows.

Diana, glad to hear it's working.
