Chip in windshield question... - Microman - 04-20-2025

Just returned from roadtrip, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and back to California. , and I thought that something had hit the windshield, and after cars first wash and vacuuming, I see that there is a spot on the windshield that is not a dead bug.

its about 1/4 to 3/8 of and inch. and makes a round pattern.

What can I expect from gong to one of those chip repair places? I assume it will still be visible but may help it from extending further into the windshield?

Funny thing is I refused the glass and tire insurance that was $1,035..... but I am sure that getting a single chip fixed will be less than that....

for something that small, they'll fill with clear epoxy. I just had one done. It's not perfect, but good enough. FWIW, I have a zero deductible for comprehensive, because we run into rock every year or two. I could have (and still can) have the whole windshield replaced for no cost.

There are kits that can do that-maybe $20?

That number seems way too high PLUS why would you combine glass coverage with tires?

I'd take it to a windshield repair place, they do stuff like this all the time. You want to do it before the crack grows. My guess it that it will cost about $100. Or you could try a $20 kit.

Agree with mattkime, your tire and glass coverage are way too expensive. You can buy tire coverage with new tires from the tire dealer at a much cheaper price and glass coverage should be much, much cheaper. I used to pay $16/year for glass coverage but lately it has been rolled into comprehensive coverage so I don’t know it’s true cost.

Ordered this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IPS4APU?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

That kit should work, due to the small size of the chip and it’s not in your direct line of view.

In the future, consider changing your auto insurance comprehensive deductible to $50. This will let you get a new windshield installed for $50 from Safelite.
