Rather than drilling to prevent data access, I always found a hammer to be a quicker and more enjoyable solution.

I just drilled a HDD a few days ago. Funny thing is it was an ATA from a 1st gen G4 Tower, so even I don't have an adapter that would read it. I'm pretty sure it was wiped long ago, but I drilled it just in case.

You can always just unscrew them, then play with the shiny platters. I have one sitting on a thumb tack on my desk that I use as a mirror.
