Got fed up with constant USB voodoo (hard crashes when turning on peripherals, devices seeming to not get power even though spread over 3 60W hubs...) and decided to eliminate the mac as the cause, so I moved incrementally from 2012 i7 2.6 to 2014 i7 3.0.
I have to conclude that something about the 2012's USB management was wonky, because it's been bliss and even the docks I thought might be defective are absolutely fine. Backup scheme finally fully restored today. Still need to get the old boot SSD out of the 2012. About $130 for the 2014 with 16 of RAM and a 500GB SSD. Best $130 I've spent in a long time....

I had a similar experience with USB on my 2012 mini. Everything has been solid since upgrading to an M2.
