SSA email this morning - Don - 07-04-2025 WTF? I can't be the only one who had this email from the SSA waiting in my Inbox this morning. Social Security Applauds Passage of Legislation Providing Historic Tax Relief for Seniors Admittedly, I didn't read all 887 pages of the bill (okay, I read hardly any.) But I don't even remember hearing anything about this... ...provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. Additionally, it provides an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they have earned. I haven't yet determined whether I'm one of the "most beneficiaries", but if so, that might be one thing I could tolerate in this One Big Beastly Bill. RE: SSA email this morning - Le nouveau clavier de Todd - 07-04-2025 You are not the only one who received that e-mail. A quick reading (not thorough at all) implies that the bill includes language that has increased my allowable deduction. I am, as the French might say, d'un certain âge (of a certain age, meaning "old"). If true, this may mean social security income will still need to be reported, and the amount may fall below the deduction. The poster formerly known as Todd's keyboard RE: SSA email this morning - rgG - 07-04-2025 I was soooooooo pissed off to see that tripe in my inbox this morning. Those emails should not be political. I did read up on this the other day and there are income phase outs and for many people who don't pay tax on SS anyway, it will have no effect. "And it turns out not all Social Security beneficiaries will be able to claim the deduction. Those who won’t be able to do so include the lowest-income seniors who already don’t pay taxes on Social Security, those who choose to claim their benefits before they reach age 65 and those above a defined income threshold." https://apnews.com/article/trump-congress-big-bill-tax-social-security-adea287e00c7c553f69f3667d3ef78cc From AI: "Specifically, it introduces a $6,000 deduction for those with individual incomes up to $75,000 or married couples with incomes up to $150,000, according to the AARP and the White House. This deduction phases out at higher income levels, and is not available for those earning over $175,000 (single) or $250,000 (married). Income Thresholds: The full deduction is available to those with incomes below $75,000 (single) or $150,000 (married). Phase-Out: The deduction decreases as income rises above those thresholds and phases out entirely at higher income levels. The tax deduction is currently proposed to last for four years, from 2025 to 2029." RE: SSA email this morning - Don - 07-04-2025 Interesting. I've been having taxes deducted from my monthly check if only to ensure I won't be hit with a bill in April. Now I have to decide whether to stop having them deducted or keep doing it and take a vacation as a result of a bigger refund. But it still sucks that that abomination went through. RE: SSA email this morning - GGD - 07-04-2025 I got one around 8PM on Thursday (what time did the bill pass?). It certainly won't apply to me, since I'm not receiving Social Security yet. RE: SSA email this morning - Janit - 07-04-2025 Mine came at 1 AM this morning. I am horrified. Social Security accounts should not be used for politicking. RE: SSA email this morning - Speedy - 07-04-2025 Yup, I received the same piece of propaganda. “The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.” I assume I will receive a similar message when the debt increases or when my Medicare is cut. How about, “Congratulations, your farm workers have been detained and will be deported.” Or, “Buy now before excruciating tariffs kick in.” The one I won’t receive is, “Great news, we conned the American people and now billionaires like you will see your taxes remain low, low, low.” RE: SSA email this morning - PeterB - 07-04-2025 Minions must obey Der Trumpenführer. He's basically turned the entire government into one huge propaganda machine. Goebbels would be proud. RE: SSA email this morning - Lemon Drop2 - 07-04-2025 (07-04-2025, 03:42 PM)I got the email at 12:45am. Disgusting use of government agency for politicking. Reminds me of his big fat signature on the covid relief checks. We got those courtesy of a Democratic congress, but guess who got the credit. Looks like I may lose my excellent ACA insurance in 2026. Or at least the affordable part of it. Last year until I go on Medicare. And they are effing that up too through gradual reductions to reimbursements. Thanks for nothing Don.
