Do cells shrink or disappear when losing weight? - Le nouveau clavier de Todd - 07-07-2025 Does weight loss in humans mean that the person has fewer fat cells? Or, does the number of cells stay the same, but the size (and mass) of the cells are reduced? Similarly, if one gains muscle mass, are new cells created, or are existing cells getting larger? I assume that the purpose of radiation and chemotherapy is to destroy cancer cells, not just make the cells smaller. Have to admit, I don't know. thanks, Todd's seeking an answer key board RE: Do cells shrink or disappear when losing weight? - Rolando - 07-07-2025 My recollection is that while your cells die and reproduce every day, regular weight loss is caused by the shrinkage of fat cells. Weight gain from muscle building is also from muscle cells growing larger. RE: Do cells shrink or disappear when losing weight? - special - 07-07-2025 I am also curious. I think it's both. RE: Do cells shrink or disappear when losing weight? - NewtonMP2100 - 07-07-2025 ….buy low……cell high….. RE: Do cells shrink or disappear when losing weight? - rgG - 07-07-2025 According to Chat GPT Fat Cells (Adipocytes) • When you gain fat, your existing fat cells enlarge as they store more triglycerides (fat). • If weight gain is significant or prolonged, you can also create new fat cells. • When you lose fat, the fat inside the cells is used for energy, so the cells shrink, but they don’t disappear. • This is why it’s easier to regain weight — the fat cells are still there and ready to refill. Muscle Cells (Muscle Fibers) • When you build muscle through strength training, muscle cells grow larger (called hypertrophy). • You don’t typically gain new muscle cells, though there is some debate about a process called hyperplasia (splitting into more cells), which may happen in certain conditions but is not well established in humans. • If you stop using muscles or reduce protein intake, the muscle fibers shrink — this is atrophy. • Muscle cells, like fat cells, generally stick around even if they shrink. Do You Ever Actually Lose Cells? • In most cases, no — weight change involves the size of cells, not their number. • Exceptions include: • Extreme calorie deprivation or illness, which can cause some muscle cell death. • Medical interventions (like liposuction) can physically remove fat cells. RE: Do cells shrink or disappear when losing weight? - rz - 07-07-2025 there's also a "new" procedure called Cool Sculpting. Not sure if it's really "new", but my massage therapy place keeps pushing it in their emails. Basically, you cryogenically freeze the fat cells, which will "kill" them. Then, over the course of about 6 weeks, your body will flush them out of your system. I looked into it, and it's a reputable procedure, it's just not fool proof. Some people report great results. Others say they saw no change, even after a few months. I think the people who see the best results are the ones who have already lost the weight and can keep it off, but can't get rid of the excess bit of fat in their body. Liposuction will get it out all at once, but again I think the best results are seen by people who have the will power to keep the fat off. If you don't change your eating habits, it's just gonna come back. RE: Do cells shrink or disappear when losing weight? - NewtonMP2100 - 07-07-2025 .....the super model Linda Evangelista did the procedure and had bad side effect.....basically ruined her career and she sued...... If you don't change your eating habits, it's just gonna come back. Get a rubber water bottle, fill it with ice, add water, place on fat belly, destroy fat cells, repeat. No need to freeze the cells, no danger of frostbite. |
