How bad is it for fresh grated parmesan to be unrefrigerated for a few hours? - Black - 07-09-2025

I'm thinking of swinging by TJ's before a few other downtown things tonight, and considering picking up a few of the grated parmesans from the cooler as it's nearing Pesto time. They'll be traveling around with me for a few hours in temps at mid-upper 70s. Any anticipated detriment?

I think it’s fine!

mid 70s, I'd think it'd be fine.
Take an ice pack and an insulated coolette or plastic bag.
When I do the bi-weekly big shop in heat over 75º, I carry a cooler with a few bricks of them re-freezable ice packs and a zipper cool bag.
Just in case I get pulled over for mooning slow driving SUVs with the phone at their ear.
Or cyber drivers. Or yelling at ducks or geese crossing the 4 lane road against the light. Fvkg jaywalkers.

Ambient air temperature of ~70º should be fine.

I suspect a few hours at a higher temperature - 80º - might be fine too.

But ambient air temperature is often not nearly as high as the temperature in a vehicle that's been in the sunlight for a few hours, so that should always be a consideration.

But then if one doesn't have a vehicle or one's purchases won't be in direct sunlight for any length of time, then nevermind.

….would buy small bag of ice to keep near it in the bag or a cold beverage…..

Don't restaurants often leave it on the table? Unless you leave it in the sun or live in Death Valley I think it will be fine...

Never mind. I dawdled and won't have time to hit TJ's today. But the Basil is on the brink of flowering....
An insulated bag has been on my list for a while... ordered a few off amz a while back but they were garbage and I returned them.

I do remember TJ's having an insulated tote for sale…

Hard cheeses don't generally require refrigeration, but it doesn't mean leave them out in humid conditions.
