There is a lot on the UK store that is not in the US store. Rather than try and get charged for something that won't work, has anyone successfully purchased from other stores and is there a problem with using music bought from more than one country version of iTMS?

Only if you have a billing address in that country. Also, you will pay more at the UK store than the US store.
The UK store charges 79p for a song (about $1.58).

This bothers me too. I would buy songs not available in the US store.
With all the legal experts working for Apple, can't they find a way to make both governments happy?

All you need to do is buy iTunes Gift Cards from the store in the country you want to buy from.

I don't know the specific laws. You can probably find it via Google, or asking an attorney. I do know how music distribution works, and that's why I know it's illegal. In the UK, Apple only has agreements with labels to distribute music within the UK. It's how copyright law works in most countries.
