Caller ID question(s) - wurm - 07-08-2007
I plan on calling the phone manufacturer and Verizon on Monday, but in the meantime, does anyone have an answer as to why caller ID sometimes shows the full 10 digits of the caller's number and sometimes it's just the 7 digits?
We need to dial all 10 even for a local call, just adding the 1+ for any kind of long distance. I'm curious because the phone has a call-back feature, but needless to say, doesn't know what to do with a 7 digit called ID number for a callback.

on my kitchen phone it's a setting on the phone itself. i can set it to always show 10 digit or only show 7 if it's in my area code. perhaps see if you phone has a pdf manual you can download?

Thanks, graylocks. The manual indicates only that the home area code must be entered (which I did) so that the phone knows when a number is long distance. Of course, not all 10 digit numbers are long distance. Quick research tells me that it's a function of the phone company as well.

so if you didn't set the local are code, the phone would treat all numbers as long distance.
Can you erase the local area code, or put a take one that doesn't exist, like 555 I guess? Then the phone would display 10 digits for all calls. Just a shot.

If you're in an area that always requires an area code to be dialed, then try telling your phone that your home area code is 999 so that it will never remove the area code.

Thanks, all. I'll have to check that. Problem is that some numbers in the same area code are long distance and some are local. If local and a 1 is dialed before the number, I get to hear that lovely sound from the phone company.
Frankly, I'm less concerned about the call-back feature. I'd just like to always see from which area code the call is originating.

Wurm, that is exactly what the problem is. We also live where we have to use 10 digit dialing for all calls, and I couldn't figure out why some incoming calls on caller ID were 7 digit and some were 10 digit. I went back and deleted the local area code I had entered into the phone (I didn't have to enter a fake #), and since then ALL calls show as 10 digit display on the caller ID. Hope this helps.

Hmmm...I'll have to try that, blurb. Not sure I can leave it blank, though. Default is all zeros. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
