i found the Wiebetech Ultragb+ which is unforunately discontinued, does anyone else make something like this?

That was the one I was going to type in here. I've never heard of another one; the 3.5 drives are too power hungry, I guess, to be supported by the bus.

and the wieb was $150...

FWIW, my 2.5" 80 gig 5400 rpm FW drive is pretty damn fast...and 200 gig 7200 rpm ones are even faster

Bus powered 3.5" drives went away when 7200rpm became the norm for 3.5" drives.

that's a 2.5" 7200rpm drive. Not many problems running ANY 2.5" drive firewire bus powered.

3.5" 7200rpm drives are a whole different story.
