flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - space-time - 07-28-2007 Hi, it looks like flying with Delta to Europe is the most convenient way for us, since they have direct flight. They're not always the cheapest, but oh, well... Now, I am about to enroll in their SkyMiles program, all three of us (2 adults and one toddler). But I wonder if there is another program that offers more perks out there? It would be nice not to be restricted to Delta, i.e. if we could fly with Delta and maybe once in a while (business trips, other destinations) with other airlines, then i would like to combine the miles so to speak. Is that possible? Thanks Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - space-time - 07-28-2007 one more thing; I noticed that Delta is part of SkyTeam, which also has a frequent flyer program, probably what I need. I am going to sit down and read the fine print of both programs (Delta's SkyMiles and SkyTeam's Frequent Flyer), but if someone already knows which is most rewarding, please share. as always, many thanks Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - Will Collier - 07-28-2007 You don't have anything to lose per se for signing up for SkyMiles, but be aware that Delta has made it very difficult to redeem your miles. I have 100K left in my account, and we still can't find two available seats to Europe for next year that I can "spend" them on. You make a very good point about the partner airlines. Very often they'll have redeemable flights when Delta doesn't (and if you get Air France, that means free wine in coach). Partner airlines have exactly the same redemption numbers as Delta itself, you just can't book them online. You have to call Delta to get the partner reservation. Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - space-time - 07-28-2007 I've only flown with AirFrance and Lufthansa lately, and I thought that wine was free in transatlantic flights. are you saying this is not the case with Delta??? if so, I may have to bring my own bottle. I am definitely not flying without some alcohol, what is the fun then? Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - stephen - 07-28-2007 And my understanding is that Delta will let you keep all your miles if you fly once every three years, unlike AA. Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - Will Collier - 07-28-2007 Delta definitely does not have free booze in coach, on any routes. To boost your miles, sign up for one of the Delta Amex cards, you'll get something like 10K miles the first time you charge anything. Just don't forget to cancel it before the no-annual-fee first year is up. Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - PeterW - 07-28-2007 Good luck getting a bottle of anything through security - especially on a transatlantic flight Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - space-time - 07-28-2007 [quote PeterW]Good luck getting a bottle of anything through security - especially on a transatlantic flight I guess my only chance is to buy a bottle of booze at duty free, but then I might as well buy it on the plane, the price is gonna be $$$ anyway ![]() Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - Will Collier - 07-28-2007 Just as a follow-up, I called Delta a few minutes ago to try and get SkyMiles seats for a trip to eastern Europe next year, and the partner airlines came through for us. Delta didn't have anything themselves except the double-mileage "SkyChoice" seats, but one of the partners had exactly what we wanted, when we wanted it, and that included a multi-city itinerary. Now we're all set, free seats from Atlanta to Prague and from Budapest back to home. Thanks for posting the original question, if I hadn't seen it, I'd have probably let booking the trip slide until it really was too late... ;-) Re: flying with Delta: enroll in their SkyMiles program, or something else? - space-time - 07-28-2007 good deal Will Collier! I am going to Easter Europe too next week. In fact, I may be going to Prague and Berlin for a few days. I've never been to these places and I heard they're worth visiting. |
