50 years ago this month I bought a new 57 Chevy - Go To Top - 08-22-2007

Bel Air Sport Coupe. White with red and black interior. 283" 270 hp Corvette engine with

Duntov cam and 2 4-barrels with progressive linkage. One of a very few made.

Paid about $2400. Courtesy Chevrolet on Western Ave. near Wilshire, LA.

Had it tuned a couple times by Ed Pink on Pico. Around $70.

I've seen what they bring at auction.

I sold it in 64 for $500. Including having done an overhaul.

I've never bought a car from a dealer, and I don't expect I ever will.*

*might possibly make an exception for CarMax someday, but you can HARDLY call that company "car dealers" in the conventional sense of the term.

PS. Duuuuudddde, yer OLLLLLLLD. Smile

That's neat Go To Top. I bet it was a special day that day. 1957 Los Angeles. Western near Wilshire. The Carnation Diner on Wilshire was a nice place to eat near there. Not far from the Miracle Mile and "Zachary All." The Wiltern Theater.

One has to wonder if that old 57 is still on the road. It's a model that's been saved from lots of crushers. I went to a Good Guys car show earlier this summer, and there were lots of them that had been brought back from ruin.

Beautiful cars.

Had 2 - 57 ragtops back in 58-59. Both were drag racers - "D Stock" originally, bcause of the weight. Later went to modified. Frequent trophy winners. The first one was a Powerglide that I switched to 3 speed, then to a Cad/LaSalle 3 speed floor box. Used to be quite a sight with the top down and that huge shift lever coming out of the floor.
The second was a dual quad 283 solid lifter with a Vette four speed - had to cut the seat to use the Vette linkage as those early T-10 four speeds didn't have the dual mount on the tailshaft housing to mount the shifter forward.
My last 57 was about 20 years ago when I found a California Bel Air 2 dr HT in the local paper. I was caring for my elderly parents at the time and needed a hobby, so I restored the 57. Sold that for $4000.00 after my folks passed away and I went back to living on my sailboat. Wish I had it now.

Just recalled that I used to pull the LaSalle box out of the first 57 on Saturday and put in a column shift 3 speed so I could run at the Union Grove drag strip in stock class (it was a "powerpack" 283 - hydraulics and a 4-bbl). Then Sunday night when i got home I'd pull the Chevy 3 speed out (to replace the 2nd gear synchro which never lasted more than one weekend) and put the LaSalle box back in for the week. Moved to drag racing a 58 Vette in 1960 - which was also the tow car for the Henry J I drove (also in the photo collection link above).
Thiose were the days!

Sounds like it was a real chick magnet. Hubba hubba. My uncle had a '56 T-Bird but he let it rot @ my grandparents house. Very tragic. He ended up having to sell it for parts.

I also bought one but not until September. Two tone green Byscane with nothing but an engine and four wheels. It was my first new car (only my second car) and I loved it. Paid $1800. Traded it in on a 61 Pontiac in November of 1960.
