Going for Green - but special interest road-blocks - OWC Larry - 09-26-2007

As some of you might be aware, we're our new HQ is currently under construction and will be complete within the next 2-3 months. It's not just any ordinary facility, we made a significant commitment to building it Green - following the LEED program for Gold certification.

Part of our plan includes the use of Waterless Urinals. Which we are now fighting to get an exception to have... because in Illinois - mainly due to protests by the Plumber's Union who claim they smell bad and are a bacterial haven.... and no offense towards plumbers.... seems the real story is they require a lot less plumbing.

We've done a good bit of research on these systems as well as visited installations using them. They don't smell and they save an incredible amount of water.

We're going to do what we can to raise awareness and continue to 'LEED' the way with our green building project.

Just thought I'd start with a rant here.

Good for you!

I just saw a program on the waterless urinals and they are supposed to work great. . .

I thought the "waterless urinal" was the empty field behind the building.

Do these wireless urinals use the IEEE 802.11 "p" protocol ?

What's the steaming like ?

They just installed these in the Club Level of the GA Dome in Atlanta. The only bad smell I noticed on Sunday was on the field after Hall acted like a dufus and lost the game for us with dumb penalties. The bathroom smelled as well as a bathroom full of fans could. Personally I think they should be required in all new public and commercial buildings.

Sounds like the local pols prefer union $ to will over the enviro $. I wonder where the Jr. U.S. Senator from IL stands.

Anyway, hats off in trying to get LEED certfication. That isn't an easy or inexpensive endevor, especially when you get to gold. It's just sad when gov't puts a wrench in the works so to speak. They have no right to preach "think globally, act locally," if they aren't going to let citizens actually to that when it counts.

It's not so much the government, it's the unions....

Don't even get me started...

Keep at it Larry. As Margaret Mead said:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Damn unions!

In Alabama, a corps HAS to be embalmed, even if it's going to be cremated. Why? because the state morticians lobbied to make this a law years ago when cremation started to become popular.

We have waterless urinals at the bar I hang out at. If they get INFREQUENT use, they are fine, but heavy use overloads them and they become beyond nasty, especially in the summer if it is warm and humid. It's so bad that us regulars sneak out back and do some rehydration of the local foliage.

Your building, your smell. I do applaud your decision to do it as green as possible.
