moving Bootcamp to new drive with WinClone - rz - 09-26-2007

Has anybody used WinClone to move their Bootcamp partition to another drive? I have an 80 gig drive on my Macbook and just got a 250 gig drive today. I want to obviously move everything over to the new drive. I can use CCC or SuperDuper to clone the OS X stuff, and I downloaded WinClone to handle the Bootcamp/XP partition. The question I have is this: Once I make the backup with WinClone then clone the OS X stuff to the new drive (which will also contain the disk image of the XP), do I have to run the Bootcamp setup first and then restore, or does the restore actually create the partition then restore everything? The included instructions didn't seem real clear on this. It just says:

To restore an image:
Simply double click the image in the Finder, click the "Select Image button", or drag an image onto the Restore Image text field, and then click Restore.

I just did this yesterday with a couple iMacs.

Do as you were planning...use WinClone to create the XP image of the partition (I just saved it on my OSX hard drive...so it would be easy to CCC over to the new drive and/or machine).

After you clone your OSX install to the new drive...you will have to re-run the BootCamp setup for it to partition you new drive. BootCamp then prompts you to create the drivers CD or to set up an OS...just ignore these; however, there is no cancle button, I believe. Just force quit BootCamp, and your 'untitled' partition will still be there.

Then run WinClone...use the Restore function, and select your XP image. It doesn't take long to restore...much faster process than creating it in the first place.

cool, thanks. It's doing the image backup as we speak. Can't wait to have the 250GB drive installed.

No prob. Let us know how it goes. It really is a pretty painless process (I always say that with fingers-crossed!)...just time-consuming.

I was just getting ready to do this. Very timely. I have one question:

I am running an OEM version of XP home on a 20" iMac via bootcamp now.
If I clone XP to another bootcamp partition on a new iMac, will the xp software activation need to be changed? Do I need to call Microsoft (please, say no)?

OK, that was two questions.

I just redid Boot Camp and reinstalled XP when I installed a larger HDD in my Pro. If only I had waited. Well, the second time went a lot faster than the first, anyway.
