How to secure a garage - ho'ard - 09-30-2007
I'd like to turn my garage into a useable workshop . . . the biggest barrier is the potential for theft (mine is the only garage in the alley that hasn't been cleaned out).
Any tips for ideal doors? The roll-up and side doors need replacing anyways.

Do you have a lift-up garage door? If so, do the bars that lock the door by going though the track have holes at the end? I secure mine by putting padlocks through them. You can also mount brackets on the studs on either side of the door to take angle iron or 2x's to brace the door. You could also look to put locks on the track itself.
Replace glass windows with plexiglass or install glass block. You could also install window bars.
Just remember to give yourself a second means of egress if possible while working in the garage in case the unfortunate happens.

NOT A PROBLEM AT ALL.
She will work for peanuts, and occasionally cook you a meal of middle eastern spices (mostly plastique and lead fragments -- but that's the spice of the last few decades that is most popular).

when we evacuate for Hurricanes I place screw drivers thru a few of the slats in my door/rails, and then attach a pair of vice grips to the shaft of the screw driver.
Will prevent anyone jacking the door up.

Strange
During the earthquake the question was how to open the damn doors. Most of the neighbors had no idea there was a release mechanism; in fact they stopped thinking when their electronics (cell phones-etc) stopped.
They'll triplicate that behavior during the next 'quake.
