External SATA with Intel iMac? - anonymouse1 - 10-23-2007

So I'm wondering: How hard would it be to drill a hole in the back cover of an intel Imac, and route a cord to the SATA port inside? That way I could swap hard drives easily...

You know, sort of similar to the hack some folks have done with the Mini.

Any thoughts, people?

Why not... Take your time, plan it all out ahead of time, and let us know how it goes.

In my opinion, you're probably not going to get any results better than a fast drive in a decent firewire 400 case, SATA or ATA, probably doesn't matter. No drilling that way.

Like Jeff says; think through it and plan it out.

You obviously have to disassemble it. That is going to eliminate over have the people thinking about it right there.

You have to create a large enough opening to get a connector through (think Dremel tool). Finding a grommet to put in the opening will keep you from accidentally cutting a wire.

I like modding things when they get a few years on them. It keeps things new to me.

not sure the few extra mbs you might get from all that hacking over FW 400 -- or if you have a new imac -- FW 800

i do wish they had the eSATA port on the iMac -- friggin external cases are cheeeeep

Yeah, I'm going to do it only if I don't get an imac with FW800--FW800 is about equivalent to SATA, for a single drive.
