I hate networking! - bazookaman - 10-24-2007

So I got my new shiney MacBook. I went downstairs and added the MAC address to my Buffalo (b/c I have MAC filtering on) and voila! Nothing! The MacBook will not connect to the network. It keeps saying there is a problem with the connection. I cycled the router, rebooted the MacBook. What now? Btw, the MacBook is about 3 feet form the router right now.

You sure you added the right MAC address?

Re: I hate networking! - bazookaman - 10-24-2007

yup. I double and triple checked it. doing it again now...

yup. it is correct.

I need to add the airport address right?

Re: I hate networking! - M A V I C - 10-24-2007

and you've got it set to allow that MAC address, not block, right?

Re: I hate networking! - bazookaman - 10-24-2007

yes. actually I just turned OFF MAC filtering. And it STILL won't connect! ARRRRGGGGHHH!!!!!!

I can "see" all my neighbors networks nd connect to them (if they weren't password protected) but i cannot even get THAT far with my own frickin network!

Re: I hate networking! - space-time - 10-24-2007

does your router broadcast the SSID?

did you put in the MAC address of the Ethernet port by any chance? you need the MAC address of the airport card.

can you connect via Ethernet?

One more thing:

go to Network, port configurations, turn Airport OFF, Click Apply Now, then back ON and Apply Now.

Re: I hate networking! - bazookaman - 10-24-2007

ok...so i played around with the password settings on the Mac. I switched it from WEP password to WEP 40/128 bit ASCII and THAT seemed to work.

I got to this thread late, but that would have been my guess. Macs seem to have trouble with some password WEPs. I've had success with 40-bit hex, and WPA, and I've had troubles with WEP password. Glad you got it fixed.

me TOO!

FYI, WEP is useless. I person intent on cracking your WEP encryption can do it in about 1.5 minutes. WPA is MUCH better.
