change user name in new MacBook or so long Pismo in the sun... - abevilac - 11-30-2007

I just finished porting over the files from my husband's trusty Pismo to his early Christmas present, a MacBook 2.2. It's a lovely machine, especially since I added 4GB of RAM, but I have one issue. For some reason, the name on the "home" is mine because that's the way it was set up on the Pismo. How can I change that to his name?? By "home" I mean the little house icon in the finder.

Boot the MacBook from the OS X disk. There's an option in one of them menus for this (you don't have to rerun the OS X installer.)

I ended up on this thread by Googling. I just want to say how useless I think some of the responses are. And I mean this rhetorically to all people who feel the need to post "It can't be done" and offer the solutions "Buy a new..." or some other crap like that. I bought a macbook at a pawnshop for $150. It is just plain annoying to drop to a terminal prompt or other various functionality and see the previous owners name. This is a "computer" with a "harddrive" filled with ones and zeros that make up the information. Now in its most low level terms that means I can edit the correct ones and zeros on the harddrive and viola my username instead of the previous owners. Nothing illegal in changing something I bought and paid for. Maybe Apple doesn't like the fact that I paid $150 for a used one versus $1000+ for a new one, but then again, I don't make the kind of money Steve J does.

Instead of posting "It can't be done", post something like "I don't know..." or even don't post at all. And when the almighty expert doesn't know, it usually accompanies a suttle attack on ones ethics. "hot computer", etc. Bullshit. Some people don't have infinite money to waste on brand spanking new macs every couple years they come out. And what is worse is that is is all "apple" crypto protection you are really paying for. After all the hardware is usually less than half the cost when you compare to what is currently available in the PC sector.

BTW, if someone actually has something usefull to say such as drop to terminal, edit the shadow password file, etc. Then post away, otherwise all the naysayers can just STFU.
