RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - MacArtist - 12-06-2007 4 GB (2 sticks of 2 gig) of RAM - $162.50 if purchased from the OWC link on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ I paid $240 about 6 weeks ago. Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - john dough - 12-06-2007 Tell me about it! I bought it for $175 just last week. When I got my MacPro, I paid $800 for 2 x 2GB from OWC, and that was the going rate. Going from 5GB to 9GB was not as noticeable as 1GB to 5GB, but the more RAM the better. Yesterday I had 3 Parallels VM sessions open (XP, Vista, Debian) and not a hiccup. I am waiting for the 4GB sticks to come down in price, maybe $150/piece; then I will get 4 sticks of that. Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - Paul F. - 12-06-2007 Dammit... now if they'd just drop the base price of the Mac Pro by $1K or so! Must... Resist.... Urge... To... Use..... Credit Card.... Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - jdc - 12-06-2007 pfft, my 4 gigs of imac/macbook/MBP ram went from $245 to $99 in 3 months time Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - MacArtist - 12-06-2007 [quote Paul F.]Dammit... now if they'd just drop the base price of the Mac Pro by $1K or so! Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - Paul F. - 12-06-2007 Sadly, it's for a non-profit organization that I'm an unpaid member of... So I don't think the IRS is gonna buy it :-) Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - olnacl - 12-06-2007 OK, so I have 2 empty slots left in my Mac Pro now at 4 MB with 4 - 512 and 2 -1GB. I don't do anything particularly heavy but one of these days I have to move a bunch of camcorder video to DVD along with some editing. Would you recommend I snag a couple of these 2 GB to bring it to 8 GB? Bang for the buck question. Never mind, I placed the order. Thanks Mike. Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - mikebw - 12-06-2007 If all you intend to be doing at that time is just the video editing then no, you probably don't need more than 4GB. But- IMO there is no bigger 'bang for the buck' than more RAM. Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - Ted King - 12-06-2007 olnacl, I read an article recently about ram for a Mac Pro (I have one). The author suggested firing up Activity Monitor (in the Utility folder of Applications) and looking at ram usage. I would start up and run as many programs as you would ever likely be running if I were you and then check Activity Monitor to see how much free ram you have left. Actually not all the applications listed are using the ram indicated - it is often only being "held" for faster startup later if you use the app again, but the ram will go to another app if it needs it. Also check at the bottom of the Activity Monitor window and look at the PageIn/PageOut numbers. If PageOuts are zero or a very small number then you aren't using more than your current amount of physical ram (the computer isn't using the hard drive as "pretend" ram that really slows things down), and you probably wouldn't see much, if any, benefit from adding more ram. The author of the article stated that even heavy duty Photoshop users often don't need more than 6gigs of ram. Oops, I missed the part where you said you already placed the order. Never mind. :-) Re: RAM for Mac Pro is getting cheap! - clay - 12-06-2007 down to 157.50 from that Xlr8mac link! |
