Funky folders . . . - mspace - 12-30-2007 I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation- 10.4.9 Macbook Pro Have folder on desktop, with a number of folders inside. One of the inside folders turned into a no-name document. When I clicked on it to open, I got a "can't find application to open this" message. Looked all over for a replacement of the folder and contents from backup, only to discover that if I renamed the no-name document, it reappeared as the real folder with all the contents! Why would it have changed in the first place? Why would renaming make a difference? I'm sure this is a basic issue that's come up before, just my first time. Thanks! Re: Funky folders . . . - martin - 12-30-2007 What were the names/changed name that caused/solved this issue? The OS uses xxxxxx.xxx -- the .xxx part -- to figure out what type of file. Did you name the folder with '.xxx' ending? Lastly, many applications on the mac are actually packages, which can look much like folders. Right-click (control-click) on Firefox, for example, to see "Show Package Contents". Cheers and good luck. Re: Funky folders . . . - mspace - 12-30-2007 Thanks for the response, It turned out that the name of the folder was "09.Layout", the style of labeling in a series. I have since discovered that ".layout" is a suffix used by MainStage, included with Logic. That's why it automatically turned it into a document. When I put a space between 09. and Layout, I got the folder back. I had no idea that .layout was used in this way. Re: Funky folders . . . - incognegro - 12-31-2007 people using OS X should try to use less periods in file and folder names. ![]() Re: Funky folders . . . - mspace - 12-31-2007 It was something I had received. Out of many folders in the project, this was the only one that had an issue. A good discovery . . . |
