NeoOffice for Mac IS a winner! - Panopticon - 01-03-2008 ...and iWork '08 ain't too shabby either. NeoOffice {FREE} http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php iWork '08 http://www.apple.com/iwork/ Re: NeoOffice for Mac IS a winner! - the_poochies - 01-03-2008 I use NeoOffice all the time on my MBP...at least for word processing. It's a swell little app. Re: NeoOffice for Mac IS a winner! - Zoidberg - 01-03-2008 Love it as well; recommend it to family and friends who want/need Office compatibility but are cheapskates. ![]() On the same token, I will be getting Office 2008 when Microsoft releases it (in fact, I already pre-ordered it). My clients of course do all their work in Office and, when I review/edit/fix I need 100% certain compatibility. Neo comes damn close, but not close enough. Pages ain't bad for ground up work, but I find that TextEdit does a better job of translating formatted Word docs than Pages does. No experience with Excel vs Numbers vs NeoOffice. Same for PowerPoint, save for no problems opening PP docs in Neo when a client (groan) sends me photos (for my use in InDesign) using a PowerPoint slide show. Open Office on a PC just blazes, so I guess NeoOffice is spending a lot of time converting PC code to Mac or something, though I thought it was HTML based. Too bad, it's a great product. JAVA I think. The joke with all JAVA apps are that they are slow. I'm sure not all are actually slow, but that's the joke. Nathan Re: NeoOffice for Mac IS a winner! - LaserKun - 01-03-2008 Nathan, it is too slow for me too. So far, I am not a fan of JAVA based programs... And, as Zoid said, I must have 100% M$ Office compatibility. Re: NeoOffice for Mac IS a winner! - silvarios - 01-03-2008 100% Office compatibility just doesn't happen unless you are all using the same MS supplied apps from the same release. Seems like there are still some compatibility issues even between different versions of Windows Office. It sucks and is the reason why I strongly suggest that my clients don't use any MS applications. Even on Windows (well besides Windows itself). I caution my clients of the threats posed by closed file formats. Nathan |
