...when they have no intention of calling you when your car is done???
In the 20 some years I have been taking my cars to mechanics (corner mechanics, dealers, anyone) i can count on one hand...well 2 fingers... exactly how many of them have actually called me when the car was done. Even though every single one of them takes down my phone number and tells me that they will call me when its ready.

So they can get your permission for phony work they find after you leave shop.

It's helpful for the collection agency when they try to collect their fees.
...also, they often search their databases for service records using a phone number instead of a name because names are frequently duplicated in the database where phone numbers are not.
But watch out for calls from the collection agency!

If you faint when you get the total, they can't see what's going on.
If you pass out in the shop they can at least still try to scan your cc. before the ambulance comes.

my mechanic does call. one of the reasons i've stuck with him for the last 13 years. even though he's a bit more expensive than other shops, he's honest and stands behind his work.

I hate it when the mechanic calls. It always goes something like this:
"Well we did manage to fix the (insert minor service need here), BUT, when we were putting it in, we noticed that..."

heh. The 2 mechanics I use now always call. One for the Honda and one for the Dodge. They are always very friendly and very courteous. The Dodge place even calls me a few weeks after the service to make sure everything is working ok. Unfortunately they have been the exception rather than the rule.
