Is there a quick way to crop a lot of portraits? (batch processing help) - will2000 - 01-03-2008

Another youth camp ........
We took mug shots, but they didn't all put their toes on the line, etc. I ended up manually cropping and sizing 120 photos to be pasted into a FM Pro template.

For next time, I would like to automate the process, and still have all faces be about the same size and in the middle. Am I dreaming?

Edited the title - to make it longer - and to get your attention............

Forgot to mention: I am using Photoshop 7 on either a PB G4 or eMac.

You are asking for the software to do facial recognition and auto-scaling. (Canon digital cameras already regognize faces for the purposes of optimizing the focus.) It is certainly possible, but I don't think you'll find a free solution that integrates with Photoshop.

I wouldn't be suprised if there was a free, Linux-based solution that someone cooked up for a university research project.

next time, don't try to crop their mugs too close on the original shoot, so you have some working room to play with in post processing. then, use an app that allows the marquee selection to constrain in a user defined ratio (if you need something other than square), then drag and drop your selections into your FM template. it goes pretty fast, as long as you allow adequate working room on the original shots... it doesn't take long to figure out where to start in the upper left corner to get consistent selections, then you're off to the races. a larger project where it might be appropriate to insert the pics via FM's functions would be approached differently.

For future sessions the easiest way to get a consistent head size is to have reference marks in the viewfinder.
Since you didn't mention what camera you are using this may or may not apply.

Head size is going to vary from person to person (less so with kids) but what I have done in the past
is to cut a mask (probably not practical on a small camera) or have used a Sharpie with an extra fine point
and marked it on a piece of clear tape.

Mark top of head and chin and adjust camera (move or zoom) to hit the two marks.
Your cropping will at least be consistent (so faster) and file size will also be consistent.

Not automatic but certainly a lot faster than fishing around.

I'm with lafinfil. Very common for us old dudes to do that with view cameras.

Is there a free version? Where can you find it? When I Googled GraphicConverter all I got was references to the paid version.
