Mac Pro Update - Penryn arrives - Blankity Blank - 01-08-2008

Mac Pros and XServes get Penryn

"Apple today revised the Mac Pro and Xserves with a new architecture and the recently released Penryn Processors. The Mac Pro combines two 45-nm Quad-Core Xeon processors running up to 3.2GHz and up to 4TB of internal storage. The standard 8-core configuration starts at $2799."

No mention of new enclosure yet. But I suppose if a new enclosure was happening, the release would have been at MW.

Edit: Nope, same form factor ( which is fine by me).

I hope Adobe actually writes for the 8-core processors, which are more marketing at this point than anything.

No new enclosure. Pics are up at Apple.

Yep. Good eye and timing for the post. Oh and as everyone else has mentioned, no new enclosure. I was hoping for some Blu-ray love.

$2800 to get into a tower (Give or take a couple of hundred with edu discounts or for a stripped down configuration). I miss the days when the entry point started with a 1 instead of a 2. At least we're getting a ton of power for the price. I do see more and more designers opting for iMacs, though.

Are you kidding????

A Powerbook 520c used to be $2000! That's a good entry point for the latest processors!

Here's a screen cap of some Apple refurbs from Dec 2002:

$2900 for a dual G4 1.25 GHz / 512 RAM / 120 HD.
Not new, refurbished.

Note also the 17" iMac G4 for $1800.
You can now get a Intel 2GHz Core 2 Duo 17" for $850.

It is disappointing that there's not an Apple tower for closer to $1200-$1500.
Maybe the last generation refurbs will drop down closer to that; they've been around $1900 forever.

Re: Mac Pro Update - Penryn arrives - incognegro - 01-08-2008

Is this the Penryn?

Inside the new Mac Pro is the latest technology from Intel: Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Harpertown” processors. These processors run at blazingly fast speeds up to 3.2GHz. Based on the new 45-nm Intel Core microarchitecture, these processors deliver amazing performance but still maintain outstanding energy efficiency.
