which brand of gps works with osx? - beerman - 01-08-2008

i just noticed the price of gps units for the car have really come down in price. I'm considering picking one up at costco. What brands work best with osx?

I use the TomTom 910 which is both an excellent unit and works well with OS X.

i've had a garmin gps for 3 years. except for updates, i haven't needed to connect it to a computer. when i do, friends who do windows are always obliging. I'd look for a gps with the best features rather than holding oneself hostage to a computer platform. unless of course, you absolutely have no way to access a windows computer once a year or less.

The Garmin Nuvi 650 works just fine with OSX. I love the little thing!

I have a Garmin Nuvi200 that connects via USB in OS X. I just got it a couple of weeks ago so I haven't tried any updates but it mounts just like another HD or USB thumb drive.

It didn't come with a cord to connect to the computer but the cord that goes to my card reader that has the miniature USB connector plugs right into the Garmin.

I always know where I am. Just not how I got there.

I have the TomTom 510.

It works pretty well with Mac, but TT really needs to update Mac functionality to match that of the PC version (though I just run that under Fusion).

What's missing? The ability to "run" your GPS from within the program itself. It's awful nice when you're trying to enter new info to have a larger screen and the use of the keyboard.

Garmin is supposedly introducing some "Bobcat" product at MacWorld. I don't know what it is yet, it might be a GPS accessory for iPhone or something.
