Cube/ tax question - ho'ard - 01-09-2008
I lent my cube to a friend for use by an assistant in his not for profit rail advicacy organization. I was supposed to get $300 for it but now it's worthless . . .
I've been informed that it's dead after a power surge or lightning storm.
So, I don't have much experience with writing off donations of goods-- is there a minimum amount for 2007 I have to surpass to claim anything? IN past years I haven't made the threashold with my various charitable donations.

As long as you can itemize, you can take the charitable donation. That means you have to be above the $5,350 standard deduction. A donation of any one item with a value of $250 or above is subject to some additional scrutiny, though, so make sure your friend gives you some kind of receipt for the Cube that will pass IRS muster. It shouldn't be too hard, as long as the receipt includes the information about not for profit, particularly the name and tax number.

I'd tend to agree with jdc -- seems it would be pretty easy to fry the power supply.

The only way to get a deduction is if it's a 501©3 non-profit. You can ask your friend if his org has this status or call the IRS and they can tell you if it's registered.

If you want to try and save the cube; you can find a different power supply on eBay. If you don't see one listed; look for the DVIator from Dr. Bott. It uses the exact same power supply as the cube.
A while back, power supplies were selling for $80-$100. Spendy part.
I now; where do you start with something that supposedly fried? How much do you spend?
I took a zapped slot load iMac G3 500. Put a $24 board in it and my daughter is using it right now. I hate to throw Mac stuff away.
My office has become "the land for misfit (Mac) toys."

When you guys say power supply, are you talking about the external cord/brick, or something internal?

h', I think jdc was referring to the external cord/brick -- as I understand it, the Cube uses an external power supply, which seems like a likely target to get fried with a surge...

Yes, the external brick is the power supply.

I don't think the current iteration of DVIators use the Cube's power supply anymore. One would have to find an older version.
