Tetanus shot? - kap - 01-09-2008

Accidentally got bitten on the finger by one of the dogs (they both have their annual vaccinations), should I get a Tetanus shot?

Your doctor might have a better answer for you. Dial him/her up and talk w/ the nurse.

General rule of thumb (no pun intended), tetanus boosters are every 10 years on a routine basis.

If you have a potentially contaminated wound, it is preferable to have a booster within the last 5 years.

And as Chupa said, you should give your doc a call.

Note: The above does not constitute medical advice, blah, blah, blah...

I can't recall when I had my shot. It's time to call the doctor. Thank you all!

If it was me, I wouldn't panic...
But I WOULD call my doctors office for advice... (after all, they probably know when your last tetanus shot was!).

I'd also clean that bite REALLY thoroughly.

I don't worry unless it's a deep puncture wound that didn't bleed much. But, of course, that's me.

Wuppie Bite first aid:

Bad Dog !
Allow dog to apologize. (Usually the dog was just playing. Hey, you don't have all that fur and tough skin. Another wuppie would have just barked and laughed at it.)
Allow wound to bleed liberally for a little while. It cleans it a bit.
Apply pressure to stop the bleeding.
Hunt down your favorite high octane adult beverage/ sanitizer . The purer the better. Vodka or Gin works well in these cases.
Take several ounces internally as combination painkiller and internal anti bacterial agent.
Prepare a short list of favorite adult words
Apply a small amount directly to the wound.
Use adult words in appropriate sequences.
Apply antibacterial ointment to wound
Bandage wound.
Repeat internal anti bacterial treatment as required.
Pet wuppies.
Take nap.

Dogs never "Play" that way with a Pack Leader, nor fellow pack members.
Unless he was scraped by the teeth or nails, this was not an accident.

the only times I have ever been bitten by animals (aside from little rat dogs with sh&tty attitudes, and my hamster when I had wet apple juicve on my finger tip) has been when they are trying to communicate their displeasure and I wasn't "listening"

Nipping is a common dominant/pack-leader behavior. It is used in play to let others know who is boss. Non-alphas may nip to establish the rest of the hierarchy.

Letting the dog know that it's wrong ("Bad dog!") also re-establishes the human as the dominant partner in the relationship.

I don't worry about tetanus so long as the wound is not deep, was not done with a filthy instrument and I can clean the wound thoroughly. Dogs mouths may or may not qualify as a filthy instrument, depending on the dog and what s/he's been into lately.

Plus, I get my shot updated periodically. Smile
