QS 933 shuts down/restarts after couple of hours? - freescotland - 01-09-2008 My wife's QS 933 running 10.4.9, 1.5 gig ram, seems to run fine as always save for the fact in recent weeks it shuts down/restarts after a couple hours use. I replaced the motherboard pram battery and ran hardware test, disc warrior and cannot seem to figure out the problem. My fear is that it is the power supply, which seem to be a bit pricey. Anything I forgot to check other than power supply? thanks Re: QS 933 shuts down/restarts after couple of hours? - IronMac - 01-09-2008 Checked any of the fans to see if the machine is overheating? Re: QS 933 shuts down/restarts after couple of hours? - Harbourmaster - 01-09-2008 Indeed it sounds like an overheating issue. Have you blown all the dust bunnies out recently??? Personally if I'm going in to clean out the dust I would also R&R all of the components that I could. Meaning I would unplug-replug all of the cables, cards and RAM just to be sure that they have good, solid, corrosion free connections. Re: QS 933 shuts down/restarts after couple of hours? - freescotland - 01-09-2008 no dust bunnies, I will R&R, good idea. I only gave a quick check on the fan, but need to let it heat up a bit I suppose and see how long it runs. I guess having the side open though, it will be pretty cool, so if it still restarts, that will rule out heat. thanks for all the advice Re: QS 933 shuts down/restarts after couple of hours? - MacMagus - 01-09-2008 > I guess having the side open though, it will be pretty cool... Unless you live in a frigid clime and/or keep your place VERY cold that's simply not true. It's usually okay to operate a G4 tower with the door open for a little while because they don't get all that hot all that quickly with ordinary use, but the case is designed for optimal airflow with the door shut and if you just leave the door open there's a chance not just of overheating, but also of burning out a component. If you have a QS, there's more than one fan. There's one for the PSU and one for the CPU. Either fan could be clogged with dust. Clean/blow-out both before starting up your Mac. Yep, I have a 933 (great machine but getting a bit long in the tooth) and a couple of years ago it started to act "flakey"...went through all of the rigmarole and found out in the end that the CPU fan was totally clogged up. That's why I almost always immediately suggest it might be overheating. Indeed, I had to replace the CPU cooling fan in my QS last year as it was dying a horrible noisy squeeling death! got a new one from here: http://dorothybradbury.co.uk/#main-page It's the first fan on the page, about $14.95 shipped (and quick too!). |
