Found a lampshade iMac - what to do w/ it? - volcs0 - 02-07-2008

I always wanted one of these. In the trash today at work (the "giveaway" table outside the one of the computer centers) - I found an iMac in beautiful cosmetic shape. It has been gutted - no memory, HD or optical. As far as I can tell, it is otherwise OK.

Aside from adding memory, HD and an optical, anything else I can do with it? Is it worth fixing up?

What size is the display?

You don't know if anything else is working. Why gut a perfectly good computer, unless it was savaged by a PC Philistine.

I may have a shot at a 15" iLamp. Old tech, but trés elegant, a piece of Mac history, and it's still fairly functional.

I'd try some memory and an HD to see if it works, then add an op-drive.

But that's just because I really like those iMacs.

Always liked that design. Seems like it'd be a good match with the size of the intel chips, but what do I know?

I have some memory and an original CD (edit: Combo Drive) drive that I just pulled from mine during an upgrade . . . . PM me . . . yours for mailing . . .

Love those models! I'm hoping to eventually find one like that, or at a thrift store, etc.

Figure out how fast it is, and that will tell you if it has USB2 ports or not. If it does, it could be a good little iPod loading machine and iTunes server via sharing.

Other suggestions - network backup machine. Digital picture frame in the living room. Movie playing machine in the kitchen. MacWorld did an article a few months ago about breathing new life into an old Mac. Check it out. If I can find it, I'll post what issue it was.

Turn it into a lamp?

Yeah, if enough of these pass through your hands, you get a feel for them; after a while you can just tap on the gutted shell and tell if it's good by the sound it makes.

I'd love to have one of those machines....

Good point. May be dead. But knowing the University, they got something new and just tossed this one... I will see if it works.

The RAM slot looks like PC100/133 - I will look it up. Thanks for the offer Bill - if it works, I might take you up on it, as I will have to salvage a RAM stick from another machine to test with.

I will definitely look for that article in Macworld. I hope it works - the case/display/arm are in such nice shape...

Oh, and I need to find that weird power adapter as well (the one that looks like the aliens from the original war of the worlds).
