bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - space-time - 02-07-2008 I've had DSL before (2001-2006) and it was fast enough for me, but I didn't have VOIP back then. When I moved, DSL was not available, and all I cold get was Comcast. Which is OK, except I have some lags and delay that I cannot troubleshoot. I posted about this several times before. They came, checked the cables, it seemed to run better, but I still have issues once in a while. Today I check Verizon's web site again, and lo and behold, DSL is now available at my address. Last time I checked a few months ago it wasn't available. Anyway, I am considering switching to DSL (3 Mbps down, 768 kbps up) and is everything works fine, then cancel Comcast. If DSL is not better that cable, I have 30 day risk free, so I can cancel without ETF. Any downsides to DSL vs Cable? I can live with half the speed, just light browsing and 2 VOIP lines here. No torrent, no filesharing. OK, maybe a Netflix once in a while, but 3 Mbps should be OK, right? Re: bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - Black Landlord - 02-07-2008 My Comcast cable got stickier and stickier, and I had frequent mini-outages. Mt SBC DSL is technically slower, but feels faster, and uptime has been almost amazing. Re: bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - space-time - 02-07-2008 yeah, sticky is the perfect word. Re: bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - M A V I C - 02-07-2008 Check dslreports.com for reviews of Verizon in your area. Re: bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - wowzer - 02-07-2008 I have been with Speakeasy.net for many years now. Even on 9/11/01 (and I live in NYC), the internet did not go down. Even during the blackout of the northeast, the internet did not go down. Other than 1 or hiccups in the last 7+ years, speakeasy.net has been rock stable. As for the connection, who needs 3+ mbits downloads? Re: bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - space-time - 02-07-2008 Speakeasy.net offers T1 in my ares, for "only" $359/month. No tanks! Are you sure that's their only offering? I'm another satisfied Speakeasy customer. I suspect I might be able to save a few bucks if I moved to AT&T (the only other DSL option here), but my service is exceptionally reliable. Not once have I had an outage, and I've been with them since either 2001 or 2002. I put much greater stock in the level of reliability than pure speed. DSL is certainly fast enough for my needs, since I rarely upload anything. Even when I do, it's acceptable. Re: bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - jdc - 02-07-2008 had comcast for years and years, about a year ago switched to ATT DSL longest year of my life now back with comcast, happy again =) Re: bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - olnacl - 02-07-2008 [quote jdc]had comcast for years and years, about a year ago switched to ATT DSL longest year of my life now back with comcast, happy again =) My experience is exactly the opposite. Switched from ComCrap several months ago to AT&T DSL, got $200 in rebates and monthly is $10 less. I see no noticible speed drop and haven't had one outage which was NOT the case with the ComCrap setup. Re: bye bye Comcast (cable), hello Verizon (DSL) - WillyB - 02-07-2008 should be no problem |
