Gahhh! Students want me to join Facebook. - PeterB - 02-07-2008

Well, more precisely ... they are using Facebook for a student organization, and as their advisor, want me to join. Isn't Facebook insidious? Will joining it cause me to lose my hair? For my teeth to fall out? For me to suffer ED? For someone to pee on my lawn? The post-modern apocalypse?

I can see why it's portrayed in this vid the way it is... it does seems these social networking sites try to suck you in: http://www.cracked.com/article_15825_internet-party-what-happens-when-googles-parents-leave-town-for-weekend.html

Aren't those already issues you deal with daily?

Tee Hee. Smile

My 16 y.o. daughter likes it, so it must be something you would want to stay away from. Seriously though, I think it is not as bad as Facebook, but I know very little about it.

Edit: I meant to say "not as bad a My Space". Sorry, senior moment there.

As the responsible person, you should offer up $12 for a year for web hosting at http://www.bargainvault.com, $15 for a domain name, head to phorum.org, and set 'em up their own site and forum-- they could learn something about how to be more than just a hapless consumer of ad-laden websites in the process.
We could make getting your phorum set up and running smoothly sort of a mr/f forum project.

From what I've heard Facebook is on a par with Facebook, but you might consider Facebook instead.

Sad As you have probably figured out, I meant My Space. Thanks for the correction, h'.

Actually -- I keep pointing out to them that the school will give them a webpage, free of charge ... the problem is that Facebook is apparently already so entrenched in their lives that they don't see a point of doing it any other way. (I quite agree also that they should learn to set up their own site and forum...)

some of my students wanted me to join Facebook. It took 5 minutes and after my initial resistance, I thought it was great.

I am so glad that I never got involved in Facebook/MySpace... Can't say the same for my freshman-in-college little sister. She's an addict.
