What's your BP? - davester - 02-07-2008 The thread below on blood pressure monitors made me pull mine out of the drawer to see what model number I had. While it was out I took my blood pressure 132/85 with an 81 pulse. Definitely not great but not too awful either. My doc says to aim for 120/80. I'm a bit surprised at the resting pulse, which is usually about 60. Probably this is a result of lack of exercise after suffering a deep vein thrombosis & pulmonary embolism. Time to get out running again! I certainly want to avoid meds if at all possible Anybody else wrestling with overly high BPs? Have you caved to drugs or do you manage it through diet/exercise? Re: What's your BP? - SKYLANE - 02-07-2008 123/73 Re: What's your BP? - simonm - 02-07-2008 [quote davester]... blood pressure monitors .. 132/85 with an 81 pulse. ... Comments: the battery operatored monitors are not necessarily very accurate. Blood pressure can vary a lot during the day. What you need to know is your baseline - some people just tend to have higher or lower blood pressures anyway - so long as it is not way out of the ballpark there isn't anything to worry about. Track it for a few months. See does it go down as you get fitter. It tends to go up as you get older but that may simply be that on average people tend to be heavier and less fit as they get older. (with the obesity epidemic that may not hold any more) Exercise is definitely a good idea. I look at mine fairly regularly and I try to take it in the same location/conditions every time otherwise it is not comparable. I don't quite trust our device any more and will check it at the docs the next time I go. I got 3 totally different readings in a row today in round numbers 150/90, 135/80 , and 120/70. The first was very soon after some activity and it has dropped back as I relaxed and sat back on the sofa where I usually take the reading. So for practical purposes I am considering the 120/70 as the most accurate reading but I will take it more often over the next week just to be sure. If I keep getting the higher ones I will go round the corner to my doc one morning before going to work and check it. Hey ... speaking of exercise maybe I should walk or cycle to work this morning! (checked again before I posted 125/71 pulse 60) Re: What's your BP? - Racer X - 02-07-2008 @ 120/72 most of the time. I figure if I eat right and exercise, I'll screw everything up. Re: What's your BP? - space-time - 02-07-2008 around 120/65 but I have not checked it in about a year now. Re: What's your BP? - MacMagus - 02-07-2008 Good timing. I've been checking recently. I was a rock-solid 120/80 for many years, but lost a bit of weight last year and my systolic has shown some interesting fluctuations that seem to be linked to the weight loss. I was at 125/72 yesterday morning and 135/72 yesterday afternoon. Re: What's your BP? - Mr. Ed - 02-07-2008 I'm 60 years young - 5' 9" tall, 138 pounds. My resting BP - 118/67, with a pulse of 54. I try to eat healthy and exercise just about every day. Re: What's your BP? - blooz - 02-07-2008 My last one, last week, was about 117/75. I tend to run low. Re: What's your BP? - OWC Jamie - 02-07-2008 Mine used to run so low nurses would go get another monitor. Then listen for a heartbeat. :-) My feet and fingers were always cold. Re: What's your BP? - mrbigstuff - 02-07-2008 I was shocked at my most recent - two days ago. 132/81. Yikes, I'm always 120-125 over 72-75. But, I imagine it has something to do with my other complete surprise - how much weight I have gained over the last 6-12 months. Yikes again. Time to get on the treadmill. I've already eliminated much of the meat in my diet, don't eat "sweets" very much and tend to eat a lot of fish (keeping billb happy). |
