Dotster prices vs others, what am I missing? - estnyc - 02-09-2008

Since 2000, I have registered a bunch of domains with dotster.com. I haven't needed to do much configuration there, just assign a domain or two to the nameservers of the hosting company I'm using (ICDSoft).

I have an ICDSoft account due for renewal, and as the friend I set it up for uses it pretty much exclusively for email, I was thinking of ditching the hosting account, and setting up an MX record to send the mail to gmail (or simply do forwarding). I'd like to do this without having to use Google Apps, but it might not be possible.

I've found that for my 15 bucks a year with Dotster, I can do exactly none of this.

If I want url forwarding, it's an extra ten bucks a year.

If I want to configure any DNS settings (CNAME, MX, etc) I have to add DNS management as a service, for yet another ten bucks a year.

Although it's very hard to figure out from Godaddy's horrible web site, it seems that all or most of these dotster extras are included in Godaddy's regular price.

Yahoo's domain registration service explicitly includes DNS management in its 10/year price.

I'd always thought highly of Dotster, but it seems to me they're charging extra for services most other registrars toss in for free. I'm especially ticked off about the DNS Management fee.

Am I missing something? If I haven't, I can't imagine why anyone would stay with dotster when you have to pay extra for services which other registrars include with their base fees.

Can someone enlighten me? I seem to remember these services weren't always extra at dotster, but as I've never needed them until now, I haven't kept track.

Eric

Dotster spams me, even though I've requested off their list.

I have Godaddy and have lots of email problems. The email server drops unexpectedly and they block many ISPs from delivering mail -- legitimate ISPs.

I'll be dropping Godaddy soon.

despite godaddy's annoying site and incessant marketing of services that I don't want or need, I've found them to be very reliable, lowest cost and most features of any registrar that I've used. To help out on the cost end, I've always found coupons to get 10% off or similar deal.

I should add, I just use godaddy as a registrar. I don't use any of their other services (hosting, email, domain forwarding, etc, etc).

I was considering using forwarding, so a friend could use gmail with her own domain address. Also set her up with dot mac, which would be of more value to her right now.

I have all my domains registered with http://www.namecheap.com/. No problems thus far, and it's been several years. BTW, you can usually google to find codes for a small discount on initial registration. Haven't seen any codes for renewals, though.

Thanks, wurm. Maybe it's time I dumped Dotster.

I'm using MyDomain.com for my domains as well as email. No hosting as of yet. No complaints but it's not like I've used every registrar in existence for comparison.
