On 10.5.1 I was able to start from my external drives with Tiger on them. (both USB and FireWire). I have a MacBook core duo that I ran the 10.5.2 combo updater and graphics update on and everything else is OK but can't start from any pre-Leopard disk any more. I tried restart with option key, startup disk in system prefs, and repaired the disk and the preferences. I keep Tiger on 2 of my 4 external disks for a couple of G4 computers we have. Even the Tiger disk won't work (retail). As I said above, the disks used to boot under 10.5.1 but not on 10.5.2 that is now on the MacBook. They work on G4's. Am I missing something? TIA

That seems pretty odd... tried a PRAM reset? Heck - if all else fails, have you tried disconnecting the Leopard volumes to see if it rediscovers those Tiger.
Kinda grasping here as I haven't yet hit this issue. I just updated to 10.5.2 and haven't yet tried firing up the 10.4.11 drive I keep in the same machine since yet. But will be trying that tonight.

It sounds like that's that PowerPC version of Tiger that's on those external drives from your G4s, and it can't run on a Intel based MacBook at all. 10.5.2 had nothing to do with this. The Tiger retail Disk is PowerPC only too.
Are you saying that with 10.5.1 on the MacBook you were able to boot these, or was it 10.5.1 on a G4 that you had booted with?

I missed that little detail....
PPC uses Apple Partition Map... Intel Macs need GUID volumes to boot from.
You implied they were booting up before on the same machine though not working now from?
The PRAM reset would apply to the G4, not to the MacBook.
Volumes that boot on the PPC G4 aren't supported for boot in Intel or vice versa. You can fully, interchangeable read/write though on both system types regardless of the partition scheme.

Small detail that trips up a lot of folks.
Don't try to do a FirmWare update on a MacIntel while booted from an APM disc though!
You'll totally screw up things!

10.4.10 works on my Mac mini that shipped wtih 10.5.0 and has 10.5.2 installed on the internal drive.
Due to crippling NFS bugs on 10.5.2 (and 10.5.1 and 10.5.0) I had to install Tiger from 10.4.10 installer that came with my older mini to an external firewire disk. Booted right up from that - and NFS works great.
