I have configured a QuickSilver G4 with some big harddrives to act as Server. I want to place it in garage as a "headless" machine, just power and ethernet hooked up to it. I have 10.5.2 on the QuickSilver (with the help of Leopard Assist).
I want to control it via "Screen Sharing" from a MacBook Pro and manipulate it for "File Sharing" amongst a handful of Macs (and maybe some PCs). All are on a home network.
Does anyone know a handy site, magazine article, or have notes available on the "ins and outs" of setting up the preferences for these features. I keep going to Help on Apple when working with the Preference panels, but their Help doesn't seem to be enough detail for me to gain a clear understanding. I always have further questions that are not answered in the help. Maybe they bave a "basics" tutorial and I have not yet found it.
I keep getting confused on the detailed nuances of VNC, Users, Everyone, authorized Users, Administrator, etc. I just want to get it all clear in my mind.

Go to System Prefs on both machines--in Sharing select Screen sharing on both machines.
Simple--just go to a finder window--then click on your remote machine. Then select share screen--you are there. You will have to enter the log in name and password for the remote machine-then select save in keychain.
For file sharing--same thing-just make sure file sharing is enabled, and instead of screen share select connect from the finder window.

do you really need to "control" it?
or just access the drives?
if its the latter, you just need file sharing turned on...

Screen Sharing is handy for a number of things including OS updates, etc.

Thanks for the simple notes. I have Screen Sharing & File Sharing already turned on and working. Just want to understand the nuances of the setups for VNC, Users, Everyone, Admin, etc. Some options are for Read & Write, Read Only, No Access, Drop Box Only, etc. I just trying to figure out all these nuances.
I have a Mirrored RAID setup on the QuickSilver with a small drive for the OS. The options I can select for one drive don't seem to be the same features I can select for the other drive (some of the options are grayed out). Just not making sense to me, yet. I figure I am lacking a basic tutorial for thoroughly understanding the preference settings.

Skylane - I think we are all assuming that you are talking about your own private network, where you have the only account. If true, just set up file sharing, printer sharing, and screen sharing on both machines and you are good to go. No passwords needed if the account is identical on both machines. The QS is essentially just another drive, but live and running Leopard. The various other users you mention can be ignored, as they are the same on both machines, IFF THE ACCOUNTS ARE THE SAME.
If you have an office network, with multiple accounts that will need access to that QS, it is now a different matter, and not my forte.

I wan't really planning to get into the details of what I was trying to do. I was looking for more of a tutorial to educate myself on what is possible, then tailor and apply to my needs. In any case, what follows is what I am trying to do...
QuickSilver:
800 GHz Dual Processor
1 GB RAM
1 20 GB Harddrive with Leopard OS (onboard IDE)
1 500 GB Mirrored RAID drive (wit two 500 GB SATA drives on PCI cards)
Desired Location for QuickSilver:
Garage with only Power and Ethernet
What I am trying to accomplish is this, if it is possible:
Screenshare:
For me only from my MacBook Pro. Run programs like iTunes for iTunes server. Run updates. Etc.
I want to be administrator while screensharing to that computer.
File Sharing:
Me: "Read and Write" to both OS drive and the RAID drive
Roommate: "Read and Write" only RAID drive
Friends that drop by: "Read Only" specific directories on RAID drive
