22" big enuff? - sam ward - 02-15-2008

I just installed a Viewsonic VA2226W on my G4 (ATI radeon 9600 pro, 64Mb) and since I've criticized using lcds for image editing, I thought I give this one a good mark, esp for $239 after a viewsonic $30 rebate (PCNation -- 8 on the resellerratings -- no s&h). This viewsonic model got a very good review for an economy large lcd. I'd still go for a crt if it were 8" deep for my photoshop work, but I can't complain with this lcd.
Lcds out of the box require calibrating. Both my Samsung 931c and this Viewsonic were calilbrated with the Spyder2 suite. I found the calibration systems, or OSDs, that came with the lcds pretty useless, especially for brightness and contrast.

I've read that all 22" LCDs use TN panels, which are not known for their color accuracy. In fact, the majority of them are only 6-bit panels (I'm not sure which, if any, are 8-bit). For the price you paid, you probably got one.

If you want a good LCD display for color editing, you have to do a lot of research and be prepared to throw down some coin. Some 20" displays are good, some not so much. Some 24" displays are pretty good, some not so much. Usually the more expensive displays use better panels. I personally don't believe in cheaping out on a display no matter what kind of work you do, but that's just me.

How do your colors look for you after using the calibrator?

I have never succeded in getting an absolute color match between monitor and printer for one print after the other. There always are variations between the color source embedded in the image (or subsequent conversion), photoshop's proofing setup, and the printer profiler. That was true with crt's as well, though the LaCie electron blue IV was about as good as it got. I haven't tried to profile the viewsonic with a printer as yet, but for an economy large screen the color is o.k. Maybe led's will resolve some problems.
