Anyone have a basic knowledge of HP peecees? - ho'ard - 02-18-2006

Friends' up and died this past week. No nothing when you try to start it. It's a 3-4 year old HP Pavilion desktop model, tower-shaped, proprietary case but not crazy-overstyled.
My question is, how likely would it be to take a "standard" aftermarket power supply?
Thx . . .

yank it out and take it to a place that sells ATX power supplies and look.

It might be a Micro ATX power supply but I doubt it. Emachines always used messed up sizes. I agree with Racer X, take it out and ride down to a shop that sells them and compare.

check that the power switch hasn't been pushed too hard and the back half of the push button isn't laying on the floor of the case ?
the switch on the back ?
got another power supply laying around, or another PC to swap test ?

Don't know the innards but my experience with HP DTs is "I don't like them" It is the only brand of computer that has ever died on me.

I have worked on a lot of those Wal Mart specials and they usually have a under rated Power Supply; 175 Watts or so. It is usually a micro ATX size to fit into the small case.
They usually run at close to the capacity of the supply. People try to upgrade the system with a CD/RW and it runs about 30 seconds before self destructing. Replace it with a good +300 wattt micro ATX.

So I'm hearing a standard Micro-ATX power supply will probably work-- no "HP special part ##" kind of BS?
Thanks.

(of course I will open it up, when I have it).

My main (and hopefully only) stop will be Microcenter, but I get up that way -very- infrequently these days so it will be good to know beforehand . . .

Take it with you. Their selection is pretty extensive here in Hickville, so I imagine it will be the same in Chicago.
